چکیده

Four experiments examined the strategies that individuals develop in sentential reasoning. They led to the discovery of five different strategies. According to the theory proposed in the paper, each of the strategies depends on component tactics, which all normal adults possess, and which are based on mental models. Reasoners vary their use of tactics in ways that have no deterministic account. This variation leads different individuals to assemble different strategies, which include the construction of incremental diagrams corresponding to mental models, and the pursuit of the consequences of a single model step by step. Moreover, the difficulty of a problem (i.e., the number of mental models required by the premises) predisposes reasoners towards certain strategies. Likewise, the sentential connectives in the premises also bias reasoners towards certain strategies, e.g., conditional premises tend to elicit reasoning step by step whereas disjunctive premises tend to elicit incremental diagrams. © 2002 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. The Role of Working Memory and External Representation in Individual Decision Making

Exploratory research into the role of visual and verbal working memory in diagrammtic reasoning is presented. Eighty subjects participated in an experiment where thirty-four different gain/loss problems were represented in sentential and graphical form. In order to test the role of each component of Baddeley’s model of working memory, subjects performed verbal, visual, and mental suppression ta...

Heterogeneous Reasoning in Real Arithmetic

Diagrams often complement sentential proofs in mathematics. However, diagrams are rarely used as standalone reasoning tools. Thus we propose to integrate diagrammatic reasoning with an existing sentential theorem prover, thus enabling so-called heterogeneous reasoning, particularly in real arithmetic. We will study a set of diagrammatic proof examples from which we will construct a diagrammatic...

Perceptual Representation and Reasoning

A common view of reasoning in cognitive science is that it is a process that operates on abstract sentential representations. This view implies a separation of reasoning from sensory perception. Consequently, the study of perception has proceeded relatively independently of the study of various reasoning strategies that humans employ. In this paper we argue that there are many commonsense situa...

A Framework for Hybrid and Analogical Planning

This chapter describes a model and an underlying theoretical framework for hybrid planning. Modern planning domain-description formalisms are based on purely sentential languages. Sentential representations produce problem encodings that often require the system to carry out an unnecessary amount of trivial deductions, preventing it from concentrating all the computational effort on the actual ...

The Effect of Intra-sentential, Inter-sentential and Tag- sentential Switching on Teaching Grammar

The present study examined the comparative effect of different types of code-switching, i.e., intrasentential,inter-sentential, and tag-sentential switching on EFL learners grammar learning andteaching. To this end, a sample of 60 Iranian female and male students in two different institutionsin Qazvin was selected. They were assigned to four groups. Each group was randomly assigned toone of the...
